How should investors think about GTA VI pre-order performance?

Investors should avoid relying on Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders to gauge overall demand, Goldman Sachs said, arguing that changing purchasing habits could make early sales figures misleading ahead of the game’s November 19 release.
In an October 19 research report, the investment bank highlighted the growing importance of digital distribution, which has fundamentally changed how consumers purchase major video game releases.
GTA VI has recorded more than six million pre-orders across PlayStation and Xbox since June 25, according to third-party data.
However, digital purchases now account for more than 85% of Take-Two Interactive’s implied download bookings, reducing the need for customers to reserve copies months before launch.
Unlike GTA V’s 2013 release, when physical copies dominated sales, unlimited digital availability allows players to delay purchases until closer to launch.
Purchasing activity could accelerate around November 12, when players are expected to begin pre-loading the game.
Meanwhile, alternative demand indicators suggest considerable anticipation for the upcoming release.
Google search interest in September was approximately 50% higher than comparable pre-launch levels for GTA V, while an extended trailer released through Netflix attracted more than 31 million views within four days.
These engagement trends suggest GTA VI could become one of the biggest AAA gaming releases in history.
Current projections indicate approximately 34 million units could be sold during Take-Two’s fiscal 2027, generating around $1.9 billion in implied download bookings.
The estimates assume a standard edition price of $79.99 and a 30% distribution fee.
The potential market includes more than 125 million PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S users, leaving room for stronger-than-expected sales.
Premium editions could provide additional revenue upside, although their share of purchases may decline as casual players enter the market.
Take-Two Interactive (NASDAQ) retains a Buy rating and a $285 price target, implying approximately 39% upside from the report’s reference price of $205.28.
Post-launch sales figures will provide a clearer indication of GTA VI’s commercial performance than early pre-order trends.
