Trump says Iran has agreed not to have nuclear weapon

U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has agreed not to have nuclear weapons, but flagged that Tehran could still choose to “change their mind.”

Speaking on the New York Post’s “Pod Force One” podcast released on Wednesday, Trump said Tehran’s promise not to construct a nuclear weapon was “the big thing” in recent negotiations. Limiting the Iranian regime’s nuclear ambitions has been a central focus of the Trump administration, and has become a major sticking point in talks to end the more than three-month war between the U.S. and Iran.

Trump also said he would likely meet with Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei should things “work out,” adding that Khamenei — who took over at the helm of the Iranian regime after his father was killed shortly after the start of joint U.S.-Israeli assault on Iran in late February — is “involved” in the talks.

Iran’s response to Trump’s statements was not immediately clear. The president attempted to depict the war, which has heavily depleted Iran’s military capabilities but threatened to roil the global economy in the process, as a “big success.”

“We’ll see what happens. We’re going to, we’re working on a deal, and that happens fine. If it doesn’t happen, that’s OK too. We’ll do it the other way,” Trump said.

The comments come as Iran’s Foreign Ministry said fresh American attacks in the Strait of Hormuz violated a ceasefire and international law, Reuters reported. Tehran accused the U.S. of carrying out strikes on an Iranian oil tanker in the strait and a telecommunications tower on Qeshm Island, the news agency said.
